Please pray for and participate with the Abbey of St. John Presbyter Council as we develop a Resource Guide for Soul Friends, that it will become a valuable resource, not just for our Abbey, but for the whole of Basileia and the larger Church. Thank you.

A curriculum development initiative of the Abbey of St. John Presbyter Council

On July 17, 2014 the Abbey of St. John Presbyter Council (Boyd W. Morris, Todd Colister and John Hunt) initiated writing a draft of a Resource Guide for Soul Friends. Continual editing of this project will be carried out below on this page until this Guide is completed and posted in the Resources section. All Basileians and expressions of Basileia are invited to participate in the development of this Guide via the comments section at the bottom of this page and then adopt and adapt the final version for their respective situations.

The end product envisioned will consist of

  1. A clear set of discipleship objectives for each of our lifestyle practices.
  2. A brief commentary on each objective.
  3. A list of resources for each practice.

The Constitutional reference point for this project is pages 46-53 of the printed version of The Constitution of Basileia, Part 3 of the section, "Catechism and Our Charism."

And so we pray to the Lord that the spirit of this prayer will become embodied in this project:

To whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life
and we have believed and have come to know
that You are the Holy One of God.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ,
King of endless glory.

(Celtic Daily Prayer, p. 18)

Part 1: Discipleship Objectives for Each Lifestyle Practice

Below is a working draft of five questions for each of the three practices that seek to drill down into the underlying story behind our five lifestyle disciplines. Soul Friends can use these questions as a guide to help focus in on core, foundational issues that any Basileian needs to be willing and able to live out in each area. In light of each question, Soul Friends should first ask themselves, "Is this person I'm discipling willing and able to give an authentic and unique answer to this question by how they live that is both true to their own individual charism and to the collective charism of Basileia?"

Our goal with these questions is to bring into focus the intersection of each our our individual stories with the cosmic sweep of the story of Christus Victor and His Church's quest to destroy evil and restore all things ruined by evil, remembering along the way that there is no theosis without kenosis.

In that cultivating colonies of heaven is a central metaphor for us, therefore, each of our disciplines and their related practices can be regarded as ways of developing the kind of spirituality essential to being effective colonists of the Kingdom of God. If we––individually and collectively–– are to fulfill our call to replace the Fallen World System with the Kingdom of God, then we need the convergence of the priestly spirituality of Ezra, the prophetic spirituality of Malachi and the kingly spirituality of Nehemiah to come together as one so that we can build the City of God. Only in this way can we be a truly kingdomcultural alternative expression of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

Thus, Soul Friends don't necessarily need to ask their disciples each of these questions directly merely to test their intellectual knowledge, while doing that is fine as far as it goes. It's just that doing that alone doesn't go far enough. The more wholistic objective that Soul Friends are expected to aim for is to be confident that each of their disciples––each in their own unique way, true to who they are called to be and what they are called to do––can demonstrate the answers to these questions in their lifestyle in a manner that is faithful to the spirit and pattern of Basileia's charism.
